Cardiac Rehab Center Aims for Healthy Hearts

Alleghany Regional Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Center is a medically supervised facility for the treatment of patients with coronary artery disease. Through a comprehensive effort involving individualized testing, exercise, and educational programs for patients and their families, the program assists patients in achieving and maintaining an optimal state of health. The Center is always under the direction of a physician medical director and a cardiac nurse supervises all sessions.

Exercise, lifestyle changes make a difference

Through exercise therapy and lifestyle modification, the Center’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program can shorten treatment time for patients who have experienced cardiovascular conditions and can help prevent prolonged disability. With our emphasis on a return to normal work and recreational activities, patients often experience physical and psychological improvements as cardiovascular efficiency improves.

Who’s eligible to enroll in the program

If you or a loved one have recently experienced a heart attack, heart surgery, severe angina pectoris or are prone to coronary artery disease, then enrollment in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program could be the right choice.
In order to begin your enrollment in our program, a physician must first refer you to our outpatient monitored cardiac rehabilitation services.

What to expect on the road to recovery – education, testing, and exercise

Individual educational programs are structured for patients and their families. These programs provide a better understanding of heart disease as well as insight into and acceptance of appropriate lifestyle modifications.

Cardiac patients and people considered at risk for coronary artery disease can benefit from their involvement in our scientifically and medically sound exercise program. Using standards and guidelines provided by the American Heart Association, specially trained cardiac rehabilitation nurse therapists monitor patients during their exercise programs.

As an outpatient, individuals return to the Hospital on a regular basis to participate in a physician-prescribed exercise program uniquely tailored to meet their individual requirements and capabilities. A trained cardiac rehabilitation nurse therapist uses telemetry to monitor every exercise, including the treadmill, stationary bicycle, rowing machine, wall pulleys, and weights.

Many insurance carriers provide coverage for monitored exercise therapy. Questions regarding reimbursement should be referred to your insurance carrier.
